What Your Child Builds

Jiu-Jitsu teaches kids how to control their own bodies: how to fall safely, move with balance, stay calm under pressure, and solve problems with a partner who is pushing back.

  • Movement skills: balance, coordination, body control, and reaction
  • Focus: listening, following a sequence, and staying with a problem
  • Confidence: the kind that comes from earning a skill, not being told they have it
  • Respect: for training partners, coaches, and themselves

Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling art. There is no punching or kicking. Kids learn to control a situation with technique, not aggression.

How We Coach Kids

We coach for the athlete your child will be at 18, not the next tournament.

Many youth programs are built around fast, visible results. MOMO is built around long-term athletic development: age-appropriate demands, movement quality, and steady progress that lasts.

  • Drilling and skill work with real rest, not conditioning circuits or running kids into the ground to prove toughness
  • Other sports are encouraged. For kids under 14, Jiu-Jitsu should be one part of their athletic life, not the only part.
  • Competition is optional. When a student is ready and wants to, it is a tool for growth. No family is ever pressured to compete.
  • Respect is non-negotiable. The culture on the mat reflects the culture off it.

Inside a Kids Class

Every class follows the same rhythm, so kids know what to expect and can focus on learning.

  • Movement prep: rolls, shrimping, and mobility that teach kids to move and fall safely
  • Jump and landing work: short, explosive reps with rest between turns, building athletic power and quiet, controlled landings
  • Technique: one or more skills taught clearly, then drilled with a partner
  • Games and live practice: kids apply what they learned against a partner who is resisting, under close supervision

Short efforts, real rest, and lots of repetition. Kids leave having learned something, not just tired.

How Coaching Changes as Kids Grow

Youth Fundamentals (ages 6–9). The priority is physical literacy: balance, coordination, rolling, and body awareness. Technique is taught in small pieces and practiced through games, because that is how young kids learn best.

Youth Level 2 and Juniors. Once kids have the foundation, they are ready for more technical depth, longer drilling, and more live practice. Jump and landing work progresses as their mechanics earn it. Students who want to try competition can start preparing, but it is never required.

How Kids Progress

No belt tests. No testing fees. No performances.

Belt tests shift the focus from learning to passing. At MOMO, Coach Brian observes every student every class. A promotion reflects consistent mat time and fundamentals your child has genuinely absorbed.

  • We follow the IBJJF youth belt system for ages 6–13: white, then the grey, yellow, orange, and green belt families.
  • Stripes mark progress along the way, so your child can see how far they have come.
  • Stripes and belts are awarded at promotion ceremonies that parents are invited to.

Every child develops at their own pace. What matters is that each promotion is real.

Parent Questions

What age can my child start?

Our youth program starts at age 6. Ages 6–9 train in Youth Fundamentals or Youth Level 2, and ages 10–13 train in Juniors.

My child has never done martial arts. Is that okay?

Yes. Youth Fundamentals is built for beginners, and most kids start with no experience at all.

Will my child learn to punch or kick?

No. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling art. Kids learn positions, escapes, and control, with no striking.

Does my child have to compete?

No. Competition is optional and only when a student is ready and wants to. It is never the purpose of training.

Is there a long-term contract?

No. Memberships are month-to-month, and family discounts are available for siblings.

Where are you located?
